iPhone won't auto-sleep

My iPhone stopped automatically going into sleep mode—when I just tap it once to look at the time, or when I put it down after using it. I've checked all settings, and I've done a hard reset. Still won't go to sleep. Any ideas?

Hi, leibie101.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We’re glad you decided to reach out about your iPhone not automatically locking. You mentioned that you’ve checked settings. Have you checked your Auto-Lock and Attention Awareness settings? If not, let’s do that first.

  • Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and set it to a lower setting. For example, if you have it set on Never, your iPhone display will never lock. If you have it set at 1 minute, it will lock after your iPhone detects that you are no longer using it for a minute.

  • Then, check your Attention Awareness settings. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Awareness Features. If this is enabled your iPhone won’t lock if it detects that your attention is focused on your device (i.e. if you’re looking at the screen).

leibie101,

If we understand correctly, you have Auto-Lock set at one of the lower settings and do not have Attention Awareness enabled, yet your iPhone still does not automatically lock when you lay it on the table and get up and walk away.

It sounds like you've already tackled some incredible troubleshooting. When you erased the iPhone, did you Erase All Content and Settings through the Settings app on your iPhone? If so, do you have access to a computer where you can use iTunes or Finder to restore your device? We're asking because erasing your device through Settings will remove your user data, but restoring with a computer reinstalls the software. This is a great step to try if it's possible the issue is related to the iOS software.

Make sure you have a current backup, and try this:

Still not automatically locking? It may be time to contact Apple Support.

Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your help. I didn't erase the iPhone—I did a "reset settings." Yes, I can restore via my computer, so I guess that will be my last hurrah. If that doesn't work, I can use the nuclear option, wiping out the iPhone and starting from scratch. I was just hoping there might be some simpler fix I hadn't yet discovered. Whatever, I'll be getting a new iPhone in the fall, so I can then give my haunted iPhone back to Apple. Thanks again.

Thanks, but I'd already done all of those things. Didn't help. Also restarted the phone, did two hard restarts and erased all settings.

To clarify, this happens in two ways. (1) When I tap the phone to check the time on the lock screen, it fails to go dark again. (2) When I put down the phone after use, it remains awake, no matter what screen I was last using.

Maybe my iPhone X is telling me to upgrade this fall?
