Events in iCal I create show up as tentative when I invite others

When I create new events in my iCal using an Exchange account, they show up hashed/grey (i.e., tentative) if I invite people and they haven't accepted. (This does not occur if I create new events from non-Exchange accounts and invite people who do not accept.) I am using macOS Catalina 10.15.6.

Is there a way to fix this? These meetings are not tentative. I've tried changing settings directly in the web interface for the Exchange account (i.e., "Show As Busy" was already selected) to no avail. There also did not appear to be any relevant settings to change directly in iCal.

This issue vastly limits the utility of iCal for me as many people never accept their invitations even though they join the meetings. Any help appreciated.

Hey i_have_a_problem,

We see that you are having some issues with your Exchange account's functionality in the Calendars app. You have come to the right place to receive assistance with resolving this. Because you stated that the issue is only occurring within the Exchange account we will focus solely on this account.

Check out this resource that troubleshoots Exchange accounts on the iPhone: Set up Exchange ActiveSync on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Prior to following the steps, we would like to have you to remove the Exchange account from the iPhone and then set the account back up following the exact steps of this article.

Best wishes!
