Messages in iCloud not downloading

Hello everyone,

Yesterday, I restored my iPhone from a backup, everything restored okay, except for my messages in iCloud. My phone was plugged in overnight (and connected to WiFi) all night long and all day, and nothing will download.

so far, I have tried: turning messages on and off, restoring the iPhone once again, as well as turning off iMessage, restarting phone, and turning it back on. I’m not sure what is going on, but if someone has an answer that might help I would greatly appreciate it.

When using messages in iCloud - Keep all your messages in iCloud - Apple Support, your messages aren't considered a part of the backup as this is what iCloud backs up - What does iCloud back up? - Apple Support. With that being said, did you enable Messages in Settings > Name > iCloud > Messages?

48 hours so far - apple support says it is an ongoing issue at apple - now using ios14 so its beta and still does not work. iMessage does work just downloading old messages stored on iCloud does restore.

Have you tried plugging in the device to power? From the screenshot, it looks to be very low on power.

Hello zinacef,

yes, messages was already enabled when I restored the backup, and the messages app indicated that the messages were downloading from iCloud (see attached photos). However, after saying this for over 12+ hours (phone plugged in as well) not a single message has been downloaded, and I am not sure what to do anymore. All the steps I have taken have done nothing...

I have the same problem - restored iPhone X and all worked except for messages which first said "repairing messages" then exactly what is shown below. Now says "downloading..." but nothing is downloading!

Finally, someone with the same issue as me. Have you found any solutions yet?

What version of iOS were you on when you restored the phone, and about how long has your phone been attempting to download the messages?

Ah, I see. I have been working with Apple Support and the engineers to try and fix this issue, but I was not told of anyone else having the same issue as me - this has been going on for about a week for me.

I am on the 13.6 release, so possibly some of the code is the same on both releases that is causing the issue? Did they have a timeline of when this would be fixed?

I have the same issue on a 2020 iPad Pro 11” model. All other services work normally. All other devices work normally. I’ve seen this issue on a few message boards as well as reddit. I have tried many toggles of the Messages in iCloud settings. I even upgraded to the latest public beta of a iPad iOS 14. Still no solution, only frustration.
