Catalina crashes when backing up external disk

Frequent crashes in Catalina when backing up to an external hard disk. I only connect the disk when backing up, to protect the disk, but backups are becoming very difficult and slow. Report suggests Kernal Panic crashes.

Your HD may be too small, they need to be 2-3x capacity of the data they are backing up. If you decide to get a new drive, I STRONGLY recommend one of the following:

Thanks for this suggestion. When I finally was able to connect the external HD to my desktop I ran Disk Utility as you suggested but it checked out OK with no problems. However when I again tried to back up with Time Machine it crashed again. My HD only has 320GB and about 32GB free. I wonder if the problem is just that my external HD is too small and I need to get another one ?
