Mac Photos editing - size issues

Hi , when I edit photos via Mac Photos it does reduce a pic size significantly. Original photo size was 14Mb. If I just readjust light or color settings a little bit, size goes down to 2Mb. This really doesn't make any sense. Kindly advise .

MacBook Pro 15”, macOS 10.15

How are you checking the size of the edited version? And what kind of image file are you exporting?

If you just drag the photo from Photos to the Desktop, you will get a preview of the edited version, but cannot control the quality and resolution.

To save the edited version at a high quality, use "File > Export > ... Photos" and select Original size and a high quality.

  • If you export the photo as a TIFF, you will get the highest possible quality and gigantic file size.
  • If you export as a JPEG, select as least "High Quality". Exporting at the "Maximum Quality" might result in a larger file size as the original, which would be wasteful.

As to the color profile - when in doubt, use the option "most Compatible" or "Original". It will only matter, if your photo has been externally edited and the editor added a proprietary color profile, that may be incompatible with macOS X or if you want to use the photo outside the Mac universe.

  • sRGB is a standard that rarely will give trouble,
  • Adobe RGB will usually work in the Windows world
  • The Display P3 profile is used by my iPhone for the Night Mode and Deep Fusion photos
