When trying to set up touch ID, my fingerprint isn't being picked up by the phone when setting up. I have an Iphone SE

When I attempt to set up touch ID, my fingerprint isn't being picked up by the phone during set up. Only a few lines of the fingerprint are shown. This has happened increasingly during my use. Now i can only unlock with passcode. I have tried different fingers, same problem.
