Airplay 2 in iOS 13.6 keeps dropping Sonos speakers

On our iPad Pro running iOS 13.6, we regularly stream music from a website via Safari and Airplay 2 to two pairs of speakers -- a set of Sonos 5:Gen 2 in one room, and an amp/speaker set connected to a Bluesound Node 2i in another room.

Airplay 2 recognizes these and offers them as devices under streaming in the Control Panel. However, after some period of time it keeps dropping the Sonos set. If I open Control Panel and tap again to reselect the Sonos pair, playing resumes. The stereo connected to the Bluesound is unaffected and keeps playing throughout.

Any suggestions on debugging this? The Sonos speakers have freshly updated firmware. Could this be a network or wifi bandwidth issue?

Hello,

Try resetting iPad's network settings in Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Be certain you do not select Erase All Content and Settings as this will erase all of your information. It is a good idea to perform a backup of your iPad prior to resetting its settings.

Just an update on this. For the past few days I've been streaming music with the iPad just a few feet away from our home network's wifi router. There haven't been any dropouts at all.

My knowledge of networks is pretty limited, but it's interesting that when the iPad is one room farther away from the router, it sometimes drops the Sonos speakers but not the stereo on the Bluesound Node. The Sonos speakers are also on wifi, whereas the Bluesound is on a hardwire Ethernet connection to the router. It would seem as though streaming to the multiple devices places more network bandwidth load on the system, and greater distance between the iPad and the router may make it difficult to keep up with that network load.

Anyway, situation solved for the time being. It would be nice to be take to take the iPad into different rooms while streaming -- maybe I'll have to look at network extension devices or a more robust router.
