Upper/Lower Case Letter Selection

I'm a brand new Mac user. Just took my brand new 2019 Macbook Pro out of the box.

I'm attempting to enter my internet password which consists of upper and lower case letters.

How do you know if the keyboard is on the upper or lower case selection? When I hit the caps button a light blinks once but I have no idea if I'm on upper or lower case. And... the screen will not show because this is a password with no view of letters. It just shows dots.
