new imac very slow loading programs particularly if left on following sleep mode

I have a newer iMac that is operating very slowly. It takes several minutes to load any program/app following sleep mode. Then the operation is slow if it works at all. If it is just turned on it takes an equally long time to power on but the apps run fine. I am not sure even the first step in remedying this situation.

How new is it?

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

It worked in safe mode much bette without freezing up but still slow. Once rebooted it seems to start up very slowly, over 3 minutes, and then programs opened faster but froze when inactivity was greater than couple of minutes or so. Switching web sites is also extremely slow, much more so than older devises we have.
