Screen Sharing (Mojave 10.14.6): I see the login screen but mouse & keyboard not working

Hi All,

Please help :) I have Screen Sharing v1.7.2 activated on my home computer (iMac Pro / Mojave 10.14.6) in Control Mode. Sharing / Remote Management & Remote Login (all options) fully selected and activated on my remote (work) computer (Mac trashcan). I can connect remotely via VPN to the computer and I see the desktop / login screen w/ cursor blinking in the password box but it does not respond to either mouse or keyboard input. The mouse cursor moves across the screen as I move the mouse and shrinks over the Screen Sharing screen like it is supposed to but mouse clicks and keyboard typing does not register.

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance for looking!!

Ok, then:

  • On the "remote" Mac Pro:
    • Be sure that Remote Management is disabled
    • Have Screen Sharing enabled
    • Depending on how you want this computer to be accessed, choose the appropriate option for Computer Settings...
  • On the iMac:
    • Be sure that Remote Management is disabled
    • Have Screen Sharing enabled

Since this will be done over a VPN connection, check to see if you are connected to that VPN as "split tunnel" vs. "full tunnel." You will want the latter preferably.

Just to be sure, by "Screen Sharing," are you referring to the built-in macOS screen sharing feature or another third-party app? Since you mention a VPN, I assume that you are attempting to access the iMac Pro's screen from a Mac Pro at a remote location over a VPN connection ... correct?

How is the VPN tunnel being established? For example, your home's router provides VPN service, and you use a VPN client on the remote Mac Pro to establish the VPN connection? If so can you successfully ping devices on your home network from the remote location? Per chance to you have any firewall rules established on either the home router or the iMac or use any form of antivirus apps on either computer?

Hi Tesserax :)

Thanks for responding!

Yes the built-in Screen Sharing app (which is why I listed the version in the OP). Pipeline is this: iMac Pro (me) to Mac Pro trashcan (remote - work) via secure VPN pipe from the company. No firewall. No antivirus (Macs - we have never had virus issues).

I go through connecting via VPN, launch Screen Sharing and I am looking at my remote login screen and I can see it is in "Observer mode" (the binoculars icon is visible upper right). When I was setting up the remote machine, I specifically checked all control boxes in the remote machine's "Remote Management" area in the "Sharing" Sys Prefs. That is why I do not understand why it has defaulted to "Observer Mode".

I am reading through research it's a Mojave issue. IDK what that means or how to fix that.
