how to save a picture from aol email to photos on ipad, when I put my finger or thumb on the image, no options appear for me to save it

Are you using iPad’s Mail application or the AOL application? If you are using the Mail application > From the photo preview > Long-press the photo > Scroll down > Save Image.

If the image is opened to full size > Tap the action button (square button with upward facing arrow) > Scroll down to Save Image.
