Key remapping software—safe?

Are keyboard remapping utilities for Macs safe to use? (I use one, Hotkey Control, in a Windows computer.) Obviously one must take care when remapping any keys to avoid making the computer unusable; but I am asking about possible cybersecurity risks.

On Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad, what does the CLEAR key do? On the Magic Keyboard with a numeric keypad that comes with the iMac 24", what does the CLEAR key on the numeric keypad do? I'm hoping it's essentially the same as turning off NumLock on a Windows keyboard, so you can use those "numeric" keys as navigation keys to move around your document--the 4, 8, 6, and 2 keys navigate left, up, right, down, etc. Can anyone confirm that it does this?
