Bluetooth headphones disconnecting seconds after pairing

Hi, I am trying to connect my bluetooth headphones (not airpods) to my Mac. The behavior is roughly that the headphones will say they successfully paired with the computer, then roughly 30 seconds after pairing the headphones will disconnect from the Mac. During the period they are connected, the Mac will not play audio on the headphones anyway. I am running Catalina 10.15.6.

I have exhausted all common troubleshooting tips in trying to get this to work. I have reset the bluetooth module, removed all devices, removed com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in /Library/Preferences and reset the computer, reset the NVRAM on startup, and yet to no avail. Any tips are appreciated. These headphones do not have any problems connecting to any other devices.

I was able to resolve this after a few hours with the following steps:

- reset bt module (shift option click) and remove all devices

- delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

- shut down computer

- restart and reset NVRAM/PRAM (cmd option p r)

- reset headphones

- turn on bluetooth and connect

Best of luck to all of you who don't pay for airpods and use catalina.
