Siri says “You need to unlock your iPhone first”

There was this same issue With iOS 13.3 reported back in January. Even though the setting is to allow Siri while locked, Siri disregards it. I even went further and allowed USB devices while locked thinking that it may be the problem with the Bluetooth device. So the issue is still there, and that is a MAJOR inconvenience. I discovered this while riding my motorcycle. And for me the only way to communicate if needed is through voice activated commands. And no, the recommendations to reset the phone do not solve it. So it would be nice to know what exactly Apple is planning to do to solve it. I mean apart from ignoring the problem as usual.

SOLVED - Controlling Siri from Cardo Packtalk (or other) motorcycle headset: I have a Cardo Packtalk that I use as a headset when I ride. I’ve only had it about 6 months and could never get it to work with Siri. You’re supposed to say “Hey Siri” to wake up Siri on your phone to accept commands. I’d do this and the phone would acknowledge that I’d spoken to Siri, but then there would be a long pause (up to a minute) and then my phone would say “something has gone wrong” and would go back to streaming music or whatever I was doing before.

I confirmed that the “allow Siri while locked” setting was turned on in Siri settings. Last weekend, I started checking EVERYTHING in frustration and looked in my Bluetooth devices. The Packtalk Bold was listed there so I touched the “i” to check for further settings. Under the name of the device, it said “Device Type”, with no value there. I touched on that and was presented with several options: Car Stereo, Headphone, Hearing Aid, Speaker, and Other. None were checked. I selected “Headphone” and now it works perfectly!

The problem was that because the phone didn’t see the Cardo as a headset, the “Hey Siri” command was being passed to the phone from the Cardo unit, but the phone was then waiting on the command on the phone microphone instead of the Cardo. That’s why there was the long pause after initiating the command, while it waited. Now that it sees the Cardo as a headphone, it accepts the Siri commands through it.

This seems to be a new iOS setting (back to version 13 or 14). Good luck!

Literally on the phone with a Senior Advisor currently, trying to fix this in 2022 on an iPhone 13 after upgrading from a 6S. There is no fix. It's being escalated to Engineering.

I use wired headphones, Apple brand, so it's not a bluetooth issue. I have tried toggling on and off everything listed herein, no dice.

But what's weird is that it's not every contact! Siri will randomly call certain people and others will tell me to unlock the phone. I tried four people in a row. First two it called. Second two it demanded an unlock. Then tried to call the first again and it called without issue. I tried comparing the contact cards and see absolutely nothing different in those contacts.

The only people Siri will call without unlocking are my Favorites. But I can't put 2,000 contacts on my Favorites, no sir.

Thank you for responding but no, it does not help. As I said from the very beginning all these settings had been in place. Of course I went in and re-checked as suggested. Nothing changed, all these options are "allowed" when locked. It would be more helpful if the answer format was like "make sure that what you have done already is really done, and if so this is what you have to try" vs "we understand you have done your homework but please check again".

So the question remains: is Apple planning to fix the bug?

I have the same exact problems. All settings are enabled correctly.

Used to be able to do it, but since last update couple of months ago, whenever I ask Siri to read messages says I should unlock my iphone first. Extremely frustrating and useless when on the motorcycle, and communicating through Sena bluetooth.

But also when the phone is locked, in my hand, not connected to Bluetooth, and I say hey Siri, or tap the home button (iphone 8plus) it says the same thing, you'll need to unlock your iphone first.

So it's not just when on bluetooth, but, any time, every time, just does not work.

Is apple ever going to solve this, or is Android in my near future?

I to have this problem even though I am using an old iPhone 6s it sounds like the problem is throughout the entire Apple phone line in the most recent iOS 14.6.

I am on the road a lot and keep my phone in a holder for safety and because it’s against the law to hold your phone in my state.

I want to use Siri for voice commands but I also get the “you have to unlock your iphone first.” So then I have to reach over to my phone and push the button and take my eyes off the road for a moment.

I just wanted to throw in my two cents to let everyone know that it’s still happening and I don’t like being put in the position of having to do something dangerous while driving just to use my phone

This happens with my Cardo Packtalk. I don’t use voice commands. I push the button that gives me Siri on my new IPhone 12. I can answer and make phone calls and can dictate a message while riding and send it but when I say “Read Message” Siri says I have to unlock my phone first. I don’t have the phone in front of me while riding its in my saddlebag or pocket. I have all the correct buttons On. So it must be a bug of some kind. This was not an issue with my iPhone 6.

What’s happened to you on your motorcycle is exactly what happens to me in my suv … I can’t read any text message with any voice command without unlocking my phone. Like I said I did this for the last couple of years without this annoying issue. If I use Apple Car Play I can do it but then I must plug my iPhone into its cable every time I get into the vehicle… ridiculous ! That’s why my vehicle and iPhone connect with Bluetooth isn’t it ! I’ve given up guys … I just make sure I notice when I get a text and press listen in my vehicle, then I ask my car via my iPhone Bluetooth connection to send a message to this person. It’s my only way to reply while I’m driving. I can no longer ask to “Read my last text” , listen and then speak the reply…

I am experiencing the same problem with different settings.

When I drive I always listen to a radio app(FYI, the name of the app is HKTOOLBAR)

I have set up a shortcut for one of the channels in the app.

When I start the car, Bluetooth auto connects, but when I tell Siri that shortcut it asks me to unlock first.

Hope this adds a little information for you to fix the problem.

Hi Chris,

I only use Siri while riding a motorcycle, since the car has its own voice navigation.

I activate Siri through Cardo (via Bluetooth) for a very limited range of applications. Most frequently to call a number (Hey Siri - wait for response - call number). Less frequently to find a gas station nearby. Everything else can be done through Cardo itself, like answer a call, control volume.

There is no specific pattern when this issue occurs. I would say after some 20-30 minutes from the moment the phone becomes locked.

The other scenario is when I say "Hey Siri" and then the response comes and it does not wait for any inputs whatsoever.

I wonder if that is because mine is iPhone 7 and it is too old for proper support. Maybe the newer models do not have any of these issues.

Just FYI. After having no resolution from Support, I found a workaround. Weird as it sounds but it works most of the time. Instead of giving a direct command “ Hey Siri... Call <number>”, ( where the answer is still “You need to unlock”), I use “ Hey Siri ... can you call a number for me?”. Then the answer comes “ who would you like to call?”. I give a number and it works. Hope this might help you until Apple maybe resolves the issue.
