Safari audio sounds layered

Hello Apple Community! I've been a long lurker on here but this is my first time posting. So I have a MacBook Air 13 inch Early 2015 model and the OS I'm running at is macOS Catalina 10.15.6. I would like to point a problem I've been having even before I updated my MacBook to the latest OS which is, my Safari has been facing sound issues in which the audio playing from safari will sound layered as if the audio is being played 2 times at the same time. Has anyone faced this problem before and does anyone have a solution for it?

Thanks in advance. Cheers!

Hello Jiunn Wye,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with Safari on your Mac where the sound looks like being played two times at the same time. We want your Mac to work as expected, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Does this behavior seems to be happening with specific websites? Also, does the issue persist when you use a browser other than Safari? This will help us isolate this issue further.

In the meantime, does this also occur in a new user account? We'll want to check if there's an issue with any files or settings in the current user account that could be contributing.

Here's how to test in a new user account:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If you play music or video using an other application, do you experience the same behavior?

Cheers.

Hello there Chris,

To answer your question, it only happens on Safari which means I face no problems for Google Chrome. Moreover, there is no specific website to note, this audio layering issue occurs on all websites that can play audio such as Spotify, Youtube, Netflix and the list goes on. Lastly, this issue only persists solely on Safari. Let's say if I play music on the Spotify Mac app or play a video from VLC, the audio sounds absolutely fine. While waiting for you to reply, I shall test the solution you have given.

Cheers

Hey Jiunn Wye,

Thanks for getting back to us with those additional details. We understand this the issue with the sound being layered happens only on Safari, and persists on a new user account. Let's continue working on this together.

Let's make sure that this issue is not caused by extensions installed on your device. Go to Safari Preferences > Extensions and turn all extensions off, and test.

If issue is resolved, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

You can also, try the steps in the following link:

Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac

The next step would be to reinstall macOS. Before starting this, make sure you have a current backup: Back up your Mac

Once your data is safe, you can start the internet recovery mode to reinstall. Here’s how:

About macOS Recovery

Click on Reinstall macOS, then continue and follow the prompts. Additionally, reinstalling in this way will not delete any data present on the device.

During the reinstall the computer may restart several times and it can take up to a couple of hours to complete. Once the reinstall is finished, try logging in again, and test.

Take care.
