Apple Watch Series 5 screen half black

Just bought a Apple Watch series 5 from Sprint website. Received it today and the bottom half of the screen is black. Is this a defective watch or is there someway to fix it?

Sounds like it is defective. Since you just bought it, get an exchange or refund and don't fool around with it.
