Imac 27 won’t let me erase or restore

My 2012 imac 27 crash and iam in the process of restoring or erasing and start over but it won’t let me. I went to didk utilities and did first aid and it shows no issue. When i do restore it said operating failed. When i do erased it said operation failed. When i do erased i do format “mac os extended journaled” scheme “Guid partition map”. Is it a bad hard drive? What can be wrong?

If trying to boot into Internet Recovery Mode using Command + Option + R doesn't prompt you for a WiFi network/password, then this mode isn't available as it may require this computer to have macOS 10.12.6+ installed at some point in the past. If the iMac is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, then you will not be prompted for a WiFi network/password. Connecting directly to the router is best when using Internet Recovery Mode.

Try booting into Recovery Mode using Command + R. I don't know if this is possible now as it depends on the condition of your drive and OS. You may need to use another Mac to create a bootable macOS USB installer.

Are you first booting into Recovery Mode, Internet Recovery Mode, or from a bootable macOS USB installer? You cannot erase a drive from which you are currently booted.

If you are booted using one of these methods, then you may need to erase the whole physical drive. By default recent versions of Disk Utility hide the physical drive from view. Use this Apple article to reveal the physical drive and erase it.
