I get a message that my battery cannot be verified. I bought it new, not refurbished. Why am I getting this message?

Did you buy it new from Apple or an Apple Authorized seller? If not, it (a) was. It truly retains new, and (b) was not obtained through Apple’s wholesale distribution system since only Authorized sellers have access to that.
When did you buy this new iPhone 7? Was it from Apple?
It does look as though you may not have been sold a genuine product
