Sierra didn't install

I ran the installer on my 2010 mid year MacBook Pro. The status bar crept across and then the window said that the installation had been completed successfully but there were no blinking screens or other typical OS upgrade behavior and my machine is still running Yosemite not Sierra. Sierra is nowhere to be found.

I'll try safe mode. Oddly, when I tried booting from my system disk the startup disk routine wouldn't recognize my hard drive after I verified my hard drive, even though disk utility said that it was mounted. I had to force eject the system disk on startup to get back to my hard drive and Yosemite.
