Company iPhone locked out

We had a former employee who used his own personal Apple ID on his company phone. Now that he's no longer with the company he returned his device. We're unable to restore the iPhone because it is still associated with his Apple ID, so right now it is an expensive paperweight that we want to pass on to a new employee.

How can we get our device back?

Thanks!

Tell the previous employee to remove the lock, or supply Apple with the iPhone's purchase receipt, or if the iPhone is managed by Apple Configurator, turn off the lock through there.

razmee209: Even legitimate and cooperative previous employees/owners are likely to refuse to give out their Apple ID login details.

Contact the former employee and get this information to remove it.
