MBP 13 2020 won't recognize USB devices from TB dock after sleeping and connecting to the dock. After unplugging the dock MBP crashes and does SMC reset

Device: MBP 13" 2020 10th gen i5

Catalina 10.15.6

Dock: CalDigit TS3+ with firmware 44.1

I'm not sure if this problem is exclusive to Catalina 10.15.6, but I can't say since my dock arrived after the latest update got shipped and I haven't tried if it works on 10.15.5.

Basically, I unplug the dock at night and put the MBP to sleep. After a few hours of sleep it seems to stop recognizing the USB devices plugged into the dock. The dock has a USB audio interface, a logitech wireless dongle (for G604 mouse), a DP monitor and the power supply for the dock. When I plug it after the mac has been in sleep for hours, the mac won't recognize the audio card and the mouse (just the USB issue we had in previous catalina versions with all kinds of USB hubs and USB devices), but the monitor works and everything has power supplied to it, including the USB devices.

If I then unplug the dock and replug it, often the mac straight-up crashes completely and shuts down, powering on with an error that it recovered from a problem ( it also does an SMC reset).

The error report later states: "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset".

This reddit thread speaks of the exact same issue with a different monitor and some people with different docks:

https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/i0m9si

Basically, what I'm saying is that the original USB issue is not fixed yet and now it's much worse because:

  1. You can't fix the USB problem unless you restart the mac - re-plugging the devices into the dock won't solve it
  2. The macbook directly crashes and does an SMC reset if you unplug/replug the dock, wiping your unsaved data and crashing anything else you might have open at the time

Additional problem: Monitor sometimes doesn't wake up at all after mac is awoken from sleep. At one point the monitor went to sleep WHILE I was using the mac actively.

I have tried NVRAM/SMC resets and they did nothing.

I wrote an email to CalDigit and they confirmed a lot of other users have complained about this:

"Our engineers have been investigating into the brand new 2020 MacBooks as we’ve had detailed reports from several of our customers who have tried many different brands of docks, from OWC, Kensington, Elgato and ours and none of them have been able to function correctly via the latest chipsets in these Macs."

PLEASE FIX the usb/dock/monitor issues already! This is a problem of Apple devices exclusively. This is unacceptable for a laptop at this price from the year 2020. Cheap off-brand laptops do not have such issues with peripherals!!

11.1 fixed it for me on my 2020 Intel MBA. I could reproduce it consistently every time before that version, and now I can't make it fail. It just picks up and keeps on going.

This is with multiple bits of TB hardware, too: a TB3 dock and an old Apple TB monitor. Both of them work, whether direct to the machine or with the monitor behind the dock.

It was bad, but it's over. Try it.

Make no mistake - Apple do not care even the slightest that you need reliability from your 3000$ machine. If they did, this ridiculous problem would have been fixed in WEEKS. It is still not fixed in MONTHS.

Maybe consider another brand in the future if you need reliability. You will not find it with Apple. Many of us have written to their support, many have spoken over the phone. Some of these "technicians" have told people that "you should turn off the laptop before unplugging a dock - that is how it supposed to be used".

Honestly, supporting this brand is a bad idea. They literally do not give two cents about your reliability. These are their brand new laptops and they have ignored this bug completely. Two small updates were released since they created this problem and none of them included a fix.

Main question is:

accidentally or intentionally?

it worked for me with the first few Catalina versions and suddenly it happened with an update.

And as long as it is not confirmed by Apple, there is still a risk that it will occur again in future.

I mean, we are not talking about a minor issue. We spent thousands of Dollar/Euro for a machine which is crashing. I do not understand why officially Apple does not state out: okay, there was an issue, sorry, but we fixed it.

This is professional and not to hide it silently. A pity.

I have to chip in here. MBP 13" 2020 model. eGPU causes unexpected stuff to happen many times during a week. Force logouts primarily followed by "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset" or CPU Panics when the MBP is idle. Had the issue as well on my prior MBP 13" from 2017. Some apps even triggers the force logouts when launching. Tried to see if this was a problem with WindowServer but I haven't been able to confirm this properly. It is a hassle. Especially when we as professionals want to have the flexibility of having a portable powerhouse but need the extra oomph by using an eGPU of own choice and external monitors to match your workflow. Please, Apple - get this fixed.

It seems official to me now - Apple completely ignored Catalina and directly issued a fix in BigSur?

So, what's the problem? The problem is that Catalina took ages to reach the stability it has now and this final fix for the TB3 problem would have made it almost PERFECT.

Now, if you decide to go ahead and update BigSur there is a huge, ugly uncertainty of what kind of new issues you will experience. We already know it's going to take developers a while to update their apps - if they do at all! Older apps might never get updated. It's not clear which of my audio plugins will work and what kind of new bugs my software will have in general.

So, to get this "fix" I need to risk inflicting hundreds of new problems onto my machine.

If this is the support we get for their most stable and reliable OS right now (since I cannot revert to Mojave on a 2020 macbook), then I am so done with Apple and will for sure be going back to Windows. The Razer stealth laptops look amazing anyway.

A trillion dollar company couldn't find it in their hearts to release one final fix and let us use an ideal Catalina at least until we know BigSur will not screw our specific workflows and apps. No, sorry!!! You first pay 3000 USD to get the laptop, and then you are forced to be an unpaid public beta tester if you want a fix for a ridiculous problem that should have never existed in the first place.

Horrible support.

Upgraded to Big Sur as well. Still having issues with the MacBook Pro being idle overnight plugged into the eGPU and then I find it with a kernel panic (https://i.redd.it/dfxzqoshjkc41.jpg) in the morning... Other smaller issues - too early to tell, but I have noticed that apps that I could easily force a force logout on by launching have no problems now...

My most recent post was deleted so to my question at the end so here it is without:

I look at it this way. They say they can't refund us because its outside of the return period. They say they can't give an M1 mac as a replacement because a replacement would need to be a "like-for-like". A "like-for-like" replacement would put me (us) in the same exact position we are now. These 2020 macbooks are faulty. That's it.

Even if it is a software issue, it's caused by the hardware exclusive to the 2020 macbook airs and macbook pros. Fact. I'm pretty sure we are protected to some legal extent in this situation. If we were in the EU we surely would be. But I don't want to get there necessarily. To your point, this SHOULD be about respect. Apple as a massive company should respect their customers, not even to mention take care of people who would be considered enthusiasts, etc., just from a good marketing standpoint. As I said recently to my tech, I honestly haven't felt so disrespected by the monolith that is Apple since they made me pay $300 for an iphone 6 replacement under warranty although it was a sufferer of "bendgate". They told me this was "accidental damage" and refused to replace it after going through quite a few avenues of communication. My personal impression of Apple has never recovered. To me, this macbook issue stings even worse, because there is literally nothing but Apple's own actions that caused this with the first update, and inaction that caused this to linger even after a major OS release.

zero161: unfortunately you can't eject the docking station from the macOS. So unfortunately this method does not work for us. But nice to see that at least someone overcome this issue.

I'm so happy and proud I have A P P L E product with such awesome support and quality! Great to restart my macbook every day. Think Different™️

This overall issue is really disruptive to my business day.

I move in and out of my office with my Macbook, and plugging in my Apple Thunderbolt monitor is triggering the issue, and as it causes a restart I'm losing work.

It's also a pain it not recognising the Apple monitors inbuilt hub, as my wired ethernet connection is connected that way.

I've been a loyal Macbook Pro owner and this is my third new MBP, and I've never had to shutdown to keep everything happy, this new MBP 2020 is a bit of a let down.

My worry is that this is a hardware issue.
