MBP 13 2020 won't recognize USB devices from TB dock after sleeping and connecting to the dock. After unplugging the dock MBP crashes and does SMC reset

Device: MBP 13" 2020 10th gen i5

Catalina 10.15.6

Dock: CalDigit TS3+ with firmware 44.1

I'm not sure if this problem is exclusive to Catalina 10.15.6, but I can't say since my dock arrived after the latest update got shipped and I haven't tried if it works on 10.15.5.

Basically, I unplug the dock at night and put the MBP to sleep. After a few hours of sleep it seems to stop recognizing the USB devices plugged into the dock. The dock has a USB audio interface, a logitech wireless dongle (for G604 mouse), a DP monitor and the power supply for the dock. When I plug it after the mac has been in sleep for hours, the mac won't recognize the audio card and the mouse (just the USB issue we had in previous catalina versions with all kinds of USB hubs and USB devices), but the monitor works and everything has power supplied to it, including the USB devices.

If I then unplug the dock and replug it, often the mac straight-up crashes completely and shuts down, powering on with an error that it recovered from a problem ( it also does an SMC reset).

The error report later states: "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset".

This reddit thread speaks of the exact same issue with a different monitor and some people with different docks:

https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/i0m9si

Basically, what I'm saying is that the original USB issue is not fixed yet and now it's much worse because:

  1. You can't fix the USB problem unless you restart the mac - re-plugging the devices into the dock won't solve it
  2. The macbook directly crashes and does an SMC reset if you unplug/replug the dock, wiping your unsaved data and crashing anything else you might have open at the time

Additional problem: Monitor sometimes doesn't wake up at all after mac is awoken from sleep. At one point the monitor went to sleep WHILE I was using the mac actively.

I have tried NVRAM/SMC resets and they did nothing.

I wrote an email to CalDigit and they confirmed a lot of other users have complained about this:

"Our engineers have been investigating into the brand new 2020 MacBooks as we’ve had detailed reports from several of our customers who have tried many different brands of docks, from OWC, Kensington, Elgato and ours and none of them have been able to function correctly via the latest chipsets in these Macs."

PLEASE FIX the usb/dock/monitor issues already! This is a problem of Apple devices exclusively. This is unacceptable for a laptop at this price from the year 2020. Cheap off-brand laptops do not have such issues with peripherals!!

I've been having this issue w/ my 13" 2020 MBP since I started using it a couple of months ago, with different dock models.

TL;DR

  • Issue reproduced on 2 different 13" 2020 MBPs running 10.15.7, one running a clean macOS install (no additional software installed), w/ 2 different TB docks.
  • 13" 2018 MBP works fine in all of the (same) tested configurations.

Details:

Since I have the benefit of having multiple MBPs and docks to test with, I'm (not that folks here require convincing) incredibly confident this issue isn't due to some people having faulty hardware (e.g. logic board, dock, whatever).

  • I was easily able to reproduce the kernel panic ("Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset") on a freshly installed 13” 2020 MBP (clean macOS installation- zero software installed).
  • This is consistently reproduced w/ 2 different 10.15.7 builds ((19H2 and 19H15 - didn't bother to test 19H4 and/or 10.15.6).
  • 10.15.5 (19F2200) works fine.
  • 11.0.1 (20B50 - didn't test 20B29) works fine.

I tested 2 different setups:

  • OWC TB3 dock, with 2 devices connected to it- Dell U2719DC monitor (DisplayPort) and Logitech K120 USB keyboard:

I just managed for the first time to get my USB devices back into a working state without having to restart.

This morning I plugged in my MBP (13inch, 2020, 4xTB running Catalina 10.15.7) and, like so many days before, neither my TB dock network port worked nor my USB devices.

I tried out something new today by putting the Mac into sleep using Command+Option+Eject, then (just out of desparation) power cycled the dock (OWC TB3 Dock), disconnected and reconnected the dock (on a different TB port) and afterwards pressed a key on my Apple BT keyboard to get the system out of sleep again. And voila, my USB devices appeared again.

My Gigabit port provided by the dock still did not work (i.e. it shows as "not connected", the RJ45 port itself indicates a link and activity just fine).

The problems with restoring LAN connectivity on my TB dock after disconnecting this 2.5k+ USD device in the evening, taking it home and reconnecting it in the office on the next morning already led me to use WIFI instead. Why don't we hear from Apple admitting that this is a problem and that they are working on it?

Very similar to my experiences with my TB Docks at work and home. Constant battle wondering which device or component (sound, display, charging, ethernet) is not going to work. Reboot after reboot... ridiculous. It was better on Big Sur beta (the last one) and I'm on Big Sur (official) now and it is slightly better, but still super inconsistent and wonky.

Well, for what it's worth I disabled power nap on adaptor (it was already disabled on battery on my machine) and haven't had a kernel panic or loss of power in the past 24 hours (the KP usually happens overnight, and it didn't last night). Possibly just a coincidence but interesting. Also speaking with a senior advisor tomorrow, who wants me to create a partition on my HD (suggested by engineers) and install Big Sur, then send them diagnostics from there. We'll see.

After dealing with this problem for months on my 2020 4TB port MBP on 10.15.7 (with OWC 14-port TB3 Dock), including Apple replacing the computer the other day after logic board and IO controller replacement, and not finding this thread until just now... it's been maddening. I hadn't detected a pattern of when this same failure would occur until I read this and a Macrumors thread about the issue, and can confirm that it only happens after the computer has slept while plugged into Apple power adapter (sleeping while connected to power from OWC dock does not seem to cause the issue. I tried turning off Power Nap on Adapter like the above poster but it did not fix it. I am unable to update to Big Sur at this time due to key software not being compatible, but some people report the problem being fixed in 11.0.1.

It is abundandtly clear that you (and many others here) are right and that this is an Apple driver issue.

However, it does not seem Apple is doing anything to address the situation, or at least not enough.

For me, the observable symptoms have shifted a tiny bit with Big Sur, but essentially the problem remains - it is not possible to disconnect and reconnect my TB monitor (LG Ultrafine 5k) without a crash or at least external USB failure.

As a developer with access to their feedback assistant bugtracker (formerly "Radar") I filed this issue already back in October - but it is sitting there with no response with status "Resolution: open, Similar Reports: none" ever since.

What needs to happen that Apple officially takes notice and does something??

May I ask if you had the lid of the MBP open or closed when unplugging and plugging back the external display?

Because I found that in my case, this makes the difference, and I wonder if it's the same for others.

It seems to me that Apple fixed something in Big Sur that now allows unplugging/plugging TB screens/docks fine when the MBP is fully awake, including the internal display.

However the problem remains (in my case) when unplugging with the lid closed.

This was my normal workflow - external monitor, keyboard, trackpad at work, MBP with lid closed all day. Now I found that when I open the lid just before disconnecting the TB monitor (LG Ultrafine 5k), I can use the MBP standalone fine afterwards, and I can also re-connect the LG next day to the MBP with lid closed.

Maybe "lid open or closed at disconnect" this is the difference between those reports here that state Big Sur has helped vs. those (like mine) when it obviously has not.

Im having the same exact issue. Only happened to my 2020 MB Air AFTER I updated to Big Sur. Seems wildly unfair that we purchase these 1,000.00 machines but get no support from Apple when they make mistakes. I happens to me multiple time as day, almost every time my computer goes inactive for more than 5 min. I have deleted every third party app and also booted in safe mode, ran all the utilities, cleaned everything and still nothing.

Something I haven't seen mentioned here:

Since I've been docking my MBP2020, which has been since I bought it (because lockdowns), I've experienced slowdowns from time to time. Today, I've had it slow multiple times. So instead of restarting the machine, which I normally do (foolishly believing that the slowdowns are caused by some program or tool that isn't completely optimized), I unplugged the dock and quickly plugged it back in before the machine could go to the Lock Screen. Funnily enough, it fixed the slowdown and just jittered its way through refreshing the multiple desktops.

I still suffer from severely laggy bluetooth response to my MXMaster3 either way, but the sluggishness and the slowdowns.... do they happen to anyone else?

Dec 11, 2020 2:07 AM in response to Tony Lash

I now seem to have found a reliable way of avoiding a reboot: I put the MBP2020 into sleep mode when I leave my desk for a longer period (overnight for example) and wait until my USB devices indicate that they have been disconnected. I have a hub with an LED for each port that lights up when a device is connected. When I put the MBP into sleep mode, I wait until those lights go out on the hub, then I disconnect the laptop. Next morning, I reconnect everything and alas, the lights come back up and all my USB devices are connected again.

This is a suitable workaround for me and only slightly more inconvenient that my normal routine (moving my mouse pointer into one (active) corner which switches off the display.

Hope that helps a few of you guys until Apple finally fixes this once and for all...

Just for completeness and anyone searching for this problem, I'm having the same issue with the slightly older SD5000T dock (Firmware Version: 20.1). I've noticed that after reconnecting, the USB audio device that's built into this dock has disappeared, though everything else still seems to work.

I have reset both SMC and NVRAM, and it even happens on a clean install of 10.15.7.
