MBP 13 2020 won't recognize USB devices from TB dock after sleeping and connecting to the dock. After unplugging the dock MBP crashes and does SMC reset

Device: MBP 13" 2020 10th gen i5

Catalina 10.15.6

Dock: CalDigit TS3+ with firmware 44.1

I'm not sure if this problem is exclusive to Catalina 10.15.6, but I can't say since my dock arrived after the latest update got shipped and I haven't tried if it works on 10.15.5.

Basically, I unplug the dock at night and put the MBP to sleep. After a few hours of sleep it seems to stop recognizing the USB devices plugged into the dock. The dock has a USB audio interface, a logitech wireless dongle (for G604 mouse), a DP monitor and the power supply for the dock. When I plug it after the mac has been in sleep for hours, the mac won't recognize the audio card and the mouse (just the USB issue we had in previous catalina versions with all kinds of USB hubs and USB devices), but the monitor works and everything has power supplied to it, including the USB devices.

If I then unplug the dock and replug it, often the mac straight-up crashes completely and shuts down, powering on with an error that it recovered from a problem ( it also does an SMC reset).

The error report later states: "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset".

This reddit thread speaks of the exact same issue with a different monitor and some people with different docks:

https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/i0m9si

Basically, what I'm saying is that the original USB issue is not fixed yet and now it's much worse because:

  1. You can't fix the USB problem unless you restart the mac - re-plugging the devices into the dock won't solve it
  2. The macbook directly crashes and does an SMC reset if you unplug/replug the dock, wiping your unsaved data and crashing anything else you might have open at the time

Additional problem: Monitor sometimes doesn't wake up at all after mac is awoken from sleep. At one point the monitor went to sleep WHILE I was using the mac actively.

I have tried NVRAM/SMC resets and they did nothing.

I wrote an email to CalDigit and they confirmed a lot of other users have complained about this:

"Our engineers have been investigating into the brand new 2020 MacBooks as we’ve had detailed reports from several of our customers who have tried many different brands of docks, from OWC, Kensington, Elgato and ours and none of them have been able to function correctly via the latest chipsets in these Macs."

PLEASE FIX the usb/dock/monitor issues already! This is a problem of Apple devices exclusively. This is unacceptable for a laptop at this price from the year 2020. Cheap off-brand laptops do not have such issues with peripherals!!

I've been having this issue w/ my 13" 2020 MBP since I started using it a couple of months ago, with different dock models.

TL;DR

  • Issue reproduced on 2 different 13" 2020 MBPs running 10.15.7, one running a clean macOS install (no additional software installed), w/ 2 different TB docks.
  • 13" 2018 MBP works fine in all of the (same) tested configurations.

Details:

Since I have the benefit of having multiple MBPs and docks to test with, I'm (not that folks here require convincing) incredibly confident this issue isn't due to some people having faulty hardware (e.g. logic board, dock, whatever).

  • I was easily able to reproduce the kernel panic ("Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset") on a freshly installed 13” 2020 MBP (clean macOS installation- zero software installed).
  • This is consistently reproduced w/ 2 different 10.15.7 builds ((19H2 and 19H15 - didn't bother to test 19H4 and/or 10.15.6).
  • 10.15.5 (19F2200) works fine.
  • 11.0.1 (20B50 - didn't test 20B29) works fine.

I tested 2 different setups:

  • OWC TB3 dock, with 2 devices connected to it- Dell U2719DC monitor (DisplayPort) and Logitech K120 USB keyboard:

I have the same issue where the My MacBook pro 10th gen core i5 crashes after I unplug and plug the dock or vice versa. On top of that, it recognizes only one of the two monitors I have and it does not recognize my keyboard or mouse connected through the dock. I must restart in order to have the mouse and keyboard recognized and the monitor has to be unplugged and plugged back in after the restart to be recognized. I use the Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 mini doc which i purchased from Apple.com assuming that it would be the most compatible which doesn't seem to matter. This problem is still occurring today August 12th even after the update to Catalina 10.15.6

Aug 12, 2020 11:19 PM in response to iimac123

thank you @iimac123,

I confirm that August 12th update to Macos Catalina 10.15.6 (19G2021) does not solve the problem. With either of the 2 Thunderbolt 3 docks I have.

I have seen people being asked to bring in their laptop for 'repair' which is obviously not smart. Does anyone know of a way to get Apple to acknowledge and fix this via SW update ?

In all honesty, given that Apple has to support on macos maybe 50+ different devices and they own kernel/drivers for most of it as well - it is extremely disappointing to see that company that praises itself on 'customer experience' is struggling to fix ... I would not be surprised when people complained when Linux crashes and does not get fixed (hey it's open source) nor when Windows 10 have the similar problem but those two O/S litereally have to support 10,000+ different motherboards and various drivers (w/o 3rd parties) ... but with handful (or few hands) of different laptops that is many times easier yet Apple can not do it.

Really sad.

I picked up on this thread as experiencing similar USB-C issues

MacBook Air 2020 10th gen 1.1 ghz i5 - Catalina 10.15.6

When connecting USB-C hub or USB-C to 3.0 adaptor even without any peripheral connected (several reputable makes tried) it can:

Crash and reboot with an error that it recovered from a problem, error report Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset. (this had not occurred prior to 10.15.6)

USB Ports become inoperable for devices - but charging still works

If Air restarted, on restart generates message “your machine shutdown because of a problem” and USB ports return to operation for devices.

Weary of trying to find a workaround

Very true. It's disappointing how Apple have handled those issues.

With the first USB problem on 10.15.5, Apple advised customers to send their laptops for repair and diagnostics in the same way, for a problem that cannot be fixed at all by "repair" (it had to be patched in software). This led me to give my laptop to an "authorized repair" locally (no apple stores here) and the incompetent people there damaged my macbook physically AND returned it to me with a completely drained battery (god knows how long it sat like that, which is very detrimental to the health of the battery). Of course, they couldn't even reproduce the issue, being the abysmally incompetent people they are, and so I was left without a macbook for about 1 month and literally received new damage to it and its battery as a reward for trying to get some help. Horrendous experience.

Now it sounds like they are doing the same thing, advising their customers to go get 'repairs' for an issue that once again has to be fixed by software.

A correct and responsible way to handle this would be to make a statement early on, saying "We know about this problem and are working on a fix for it."

Oh and btw I did call Apple over the phone several times and they assured me the damage done by the authorized service is all within their right to do so with no repercussions of any sort. If they damaged my macbook, according to Apple that is considered "normal wear and tear". I couldn't believe my ears but this is the kind of company that we have now.

I really enjoy using my mac but if I have to go through the horrible customer support we have in my country again I'd have to just not buy from them again and continue using windows machines - cheaper and easier to service.

First time Apple customer, and have the exact same issues with my 3-day old MBP 2020 and TS3 dock. Spent more than an hour with Apple support, who seemed amazed that such a problem could exist. They should read these forums. :-)

Have been using PC for almost 20 years, this is not the best first Apple experience I hoped for.

Should I just use the return window and send back the TS3 dock and Mac?

Try turning off Powernap. I received this tip from the Reddit community Discord, and it worked for me so far. (2 days, no hanging or usb issues.)

System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Battery -> Uncheck 'Enable Powernap'.

(not on screen right now, so I may be misremembering exact words)

My second display issue through the TS3 Plus is still not fixed though.

I never had powernap enabled and still it crashes with my TB3 dock. 100% reproducible.

1) it works after fresh boot

2) I disconnect the dock and put Macbook into sleep

3) wake it up again and connect the dock again - this time USB ports and ethernet in the dock does not work

4) disconnect the dock and gets kernel panic and SMC reset after few seconds

Chiming in to add that this is also happening to me with a 2020 MacBook Air i5 on Catalina 10.15.6 with either a CalDigit TS3 thunderbolt dock OR with plugging a USB-C monitor (in my case, an HP Z27) in directly.

It sounds nearly exactly the same as the original poster and many of the responses. After the MacBook has been asleep for a bit (at least a few minutes, but definitely if it's been a few hours), when I plug in the thunderbolt dock or monitor, the monitors work and the charging works and all the USB peripherals have power, but the laptop doesn't seem to recognize any USB peripheral (does not respond to USB keyboard or plugged-in trackpad; hard drives don't mount). Unplugging and plugging back in USB bits makes no difference.

If I then unplug the monitor or hub, within a few seconds the laptop crashes. Blank screen, apple logo, "Your computer restarted because of a problem". Sometimes the fans spin up to full speed for a moment just before it crashes. The error reporter when it starts back up says "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset" with no other details.

The timing of all this starting to happen for me appears to line up with the mid-July release of 10.15.6.

I'm grateful others are commenting here. I've been going nuts trying to troubleshoot this and if nothing else it's nice to know I'm not alone.

harald234: this is not really helpful. Apparently you can't use Feedback Assistant when running stable macOS.

This is what I get when trying to log into Feedback Assistant.
