HDR on the new iMac 27” 2020
Hi there,
Can anyone confirm if the new 27-inch iMac launched yesterday can play HDR content using its built-in display? I’m looking to stream Netflix in HDR, and in 4K when Big Sur comes.
Thanks.

Hi Sutard,
It looks like RexCW already answered your question! The article you were looking for was just updated, confirming the answer to your question is yes, the 2020 27” iMac does support playing HDR content on its internal screen: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210980
Hope this helps!

Thanks for replying.
That’s what I think as well. But, as of now, the support document on HDR doesn’t mention the model, or maybe not yet updated. The staff at Apple Store also couldn’t answer this. So I want an definitive answer.

Welcome!
You may be mistaken about what you can and cannot get here. We are all end users like you, not Apple, and you are asking about a model that just started shipping. The fact that you got a fast response from RexCW is a great result but you have to wait for him to get his iMac
"Definitive" answers can only come from Apple Support, not these forums, until someone has a computer in hand and has tested it. If you need faster help that what RexCW has graciously offered, call Apple.
Hi everyone,
Thank you very much for all your replies. I have the answer now.
Also, I might have come out rude or pushy, but I didn’t mean to. I apologise if I sounded so, especially to RexCW, who quickly offered to help and responded further.
Have a nice day :)
I just got my new iMac today. I can confirm that it does support HDR in Netflix and play 4k HDR in Apple TV app but unfortunately it doesn't support Big Sur Beta and I can't test it out further. I think the T2 chip is used for tone-mapping HDR or dolby vision to P3 color profile. HDR monitors not only rely on screen spec but also need hardware to process the HDR signal and that's how the T2 chip works.
Since it is equipped with T2 chip, it should be able to play HDR content in Safari.
Apple will probably update the support document right after Big Sur is released. I'll get my 2020 iMac in a few days so I'll confirm it for you :))
Wow! You're quick to place an order. Please, please, really let me know when you get your machine.
FWIW, with a display brightness of 500 nits, one would
think it is easily HDR400 (400 nit requirement). Beyond
that it would be a matter of codec support for HDR.
Thank you very much! I’m now looking forwards even more to having mine delivered.
