4k Video Dropping Frames

I have been editing my 4k video for weeks now with no problems. All of the sudden I'm getting dropped frames and the playback is ridiculously choppy. I've checked the activity monitor and as far as resources go, I have plenty of CPU processing power left, the GPU and e-GPU are not even close to being used up and I have RAM available. I have over 500 GB of space left on any drive that I'm using. One is an SSD using the thunderbolt connection. This makes no sense at all. I thought it was the hardware until I checked but clearly it is not. I'm about done with editing on a mac at this point. Any suggestions on how to fix the random change in performance?

I had a similar problem a few months ago.

It turned out to be one dodgy clip.

I deleted it and reimported the offending clip and everything was fine.

To check whether this applies to you, close the Library you are using, create a new one and import some different clips.

If everything is OK you will know that your original project was at fault and by a system of elimination get to the precise clip causing it.
