My iPhone 6 was just updated by Apple, but now there is only a graphic indicating I should plug it into my computer. I have done so, and restarted the phone, but the image remains. Because of this I can't follow instructions to get my serial #, and I can't reach anyone at Apple.

It sounds like you are in recovery mode. You need to restore it through your computer then reload your backup.
