Can I push ethernet connection over the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter?

I'm using a new macbook pro 2020, and I'd like to hardline connect it to my ethernet cable.


I have an older macbook pro 2012 and a usb-M - ethernet-F connector. I'm able to connect to internet over hardline on my old macbook by connecting the ethernet cable to my usb connector into a usb port.


The new laptop (2020) has no usb ports. But I do have the multiport Adapter and I figured I could insert the usb connector into the multiport adapter and that I would get an internet connection going. No dice. It does not work. Am I doing something wrong, or will the multiport adapter not support ethernet connection?


If so, what cable do I need?

You should use following adapter to connect gigabit ethernet local network.
