Cannot connect via Ethernet using USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

When I connect using a uni USB C to Ethernet Adapter everything is fine. Didn't have to configure anything.

If I plug that uni USB carrying the ethernet cable into my USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter (because I want to run other stuff off it) it refuses to connect.

I am on a MacBook running Version 10.12.6

Quite annoyed as the Multiport Adapter cost me £75.

Can anyone help?
