after attempting an update, then restore, I get the same message that the ipad could not be found

I tried to install the latest update to my ipad last night. I awoke with the ipad with cord image with support.apple.com/ipad/restore on the screen. I followed the directions to restart, that didn't work. I went online and it said to connect to my computer and login in to update or restore. I attempted to update and then restore and both times got message that my ipad could not be found.
