as I can't merge two apple ID's.and have purchases with both , can I somehow set up family sharing, with myself using the other ID? Would that eliminate the constant need to sign in the the correct ID every time? Sorry, I'm not up to speed anymore

You can set up family sharing between the IDs to share purchases made with them. See:

I have 2 apple ID. Can I make one the main one and Family share to the other?
