Controlling audio on an iPad streaming to a speakerless monitor with a lightning hdmi adapter

As I can see this was last discussed some 8 years ago and the answers suggested there was no way to keep the audio on the iPad so one could hear it without cumbersome workarounds. Is this still the case?

Switch audio device iPadOS Hi, my iPad defaults audio to the last device connected. For example when I connect to a monitor it will route audio the monitor. Or if have I have Bluetooth connected and want to listen with the built in speakers. Is there a way to pick the device the iPad uses for audio?

No audio since os update Following the latest OS update on my iPad I cannot get any audio from a connected external device( eg active near field monitors ). I consider this a critical issue as it impacts adversely on ability to work effectively with music based apps/
