Can’t play rented movie

Why can’t I play a rented Apple+ movie on my TV which is physically cabled to the lightning port of my iPad? I get a message that it’s not allowed.

What cables, connectors, and adapters did you use? You will need to use HDMI-in on your TV.

As a test, I have been able to confirm that one can stream from a MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3/USB-C to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable to a TV, from the Apple TV app with Apple TV+ content. I haven’t done this test from an iPad yet, as I would need a different adapter.
