Apple Mail bin auto-delete

Hi, not sure exactly when this happened but my Apple Mail bin no longer auto-deletes emails after a pre-set time. The problem is that I can’t find any reference to the (iCloud) mail account anywhere in settings.

Settings>Mail shows no trace of the account, or any features (like Advanced) to enable it again.

Neither is there anything in the AppleID section nor Passwords & Accounts.

Where should it be? Thanks.

Good day Homer777,

Thank you for your reply. We apologize for any confusion, and we'll be glad to share the solution.

In iOS 13, the iCloud mail setting can be found by adding a couple of steps which we have included in step 2 below:

To set how long deleted emails stay in the Trash mailbox.

  1. Go to Settings  > Passwords & Accounts.
  2. Tap your iCloud email account > Tap iCloud > tap Mail (at the very bottom)> then tap Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced settings, tap Remove, then select a time interval.

You should then see the options to remove deleted messages:

Never

After one day

After one week

After one month

Let us know if those steps do the trick.

All the best!

Hello Homer777,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. We're glad you're here.

We understand that you'd like to personalize your Mail settings for the iCloud email address to delete any emails after a specified interval. We'll be glad to direct you to the setting where you can make this change.

Open this link to view the options to Delete and recover emails in Mail on iPhone, then scroll down to the section entitled "Decide how long to keep deleted emails" where you'll find these steps:

"You can set how long deleted emails stay in the Trash mailbox.

  1. Go to Settings  > Passwords & Accounts.
  2. Tap your email account, tap Mail (below Advanced), then tap Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced settings, tap Remove, then select a time interval.

Note: Some email services might override your selection; for example, iCloud doesn’t keep deleted emails longer than 30 days, even if you select Never."

We trust this does the trick.

Best regards.

Finally sorted thank you so much!

This confused me because ‘deleted messages’ were set to On The Server > Deleted Messages.

The confusing part is that deleted messages were still going to On My IPad > Bin regardless of that setting but ‘Delete after X days’ did not work.

Changing the tick to On My Ipad > Bin worked immediately.

I may not have noticed this behaviour since ‘Trash’ became ‘Bin’ with an update, (I notice that there’s still a Trash folder) so I’ve attached an image that might help someone else.

Best regards Gavin.
