I am confused about media management within Final Cut Pro X.

I am confused about media management within Final Cut Pro X.

My understanding of the hierarchy is as follows: Library>>>Event>>>Project>>>Timeline.

For me, the timelines carry over into my new projects, I thought new project meant, new timeline. So basically, I have 3 different projects, all with the same timeline. Any changes I make to my timeline within my new project is reflected in my other projects. Am I doing something wrong? I have 1 library, 1 event, 3 projects, all with the same timeline. Please help! Thanks!

The timeline is just the name of the pane in the lower portion of the FCP window. It’s not an object like a library, event, or project. You simply open the project into that pane to view and edit it. It can also be used for a clip to open there, or a compound clip, or a multicam clip.

I am so sorry, I made this more difficult than it really was! I was not opening the new projects, just creating them! Thanks again! Issue resolved!

The only workaround I could think of, was to make more libraries, however, I would rather keep everything in one place. Ultimately, I would like to have a library for Youtube, one for home videos, and another for freelance work in the future, each with various projects.

You don’t really close a project; you just open something else into the timeline and it replaces the project that was there.

You can right-click on the library icon and close the library. You can have as many libraries open as you want, though what’s in where can get confusing, especially if all the libraries have a Project 1.

When project 1 is open in the timeline any clips you add or alter will Not have any impact on any clips in project 2, even if the same clips are used in both projects.

You could keep everything in the same library, one event for YouTube, one for home videos, one for freelance. As long as you don’t keep the media inside the library and make the bundle too big.

I see... Maybe my settings are skewed? How do I close a project? I know how to close a library, however, I am not sure how to do the same for a project.

Greetings,

Thank you for the prompt response. Ok, so whenever I edit anything in that pane, it is also reflected in my other projects, that is where my confusion lies.

I just want to be sure, that whatever clips I have for "project 2", are not the same as "project 1". Hopefully I am making sense :-D

I am not able to publish this content yet, as I have to wait on my G suite account to be at least 30 days old, to publish to YouTube.

I would like to keep different projects under the same event & library, at least until I am able to publish my content.

I feel like an idiot lol! I was not "double clicking" on each project! That is the reason the clips in the "timeline" remained the same! Thank you again for your prompt responses!
