how do i update iphoto if it says it was originally purchased under a separate apple id account?

I originally purchased my computer and created my apple ID but subsequently deactivated my old account and created a new apple ID. now i have been able to retrieve/recreate everything BUT iphoto. Everytime I try to update it to match OS Catalina (it currently wont even open), I cant even update it because it says it was originally purchased under a separate apple id. can i just re-download it? i dont even see that as an option

You use Photos or a non-Apple alternative instead. No version of iPhoto will run in Catalina, and the Mac App Store version of it is only available to Apple IDs previously used to download it.

This document refers to a prior owner (use the discussion in it this is your situation), but is also applies to cases where a current owner's old Apple ID is the problem. The discussion below relates to the second possibility. 

 

Basically, If an app is purchased/downloaded using one Apple ID, then you can't update it with a second Apple ID. The app is inextricably linked to the first Apple ID. You'll have to delete the app and purchase/download it again with the second Apple ID unless you set up family sharing (see below).

 

You can set up family sharing between the IDs to share purchases made with them. See:
