MacbookAir Keyboard and Mouse

I have a 2013 MacBook Air when opened today the key board and track pad stopped working. The lights around the keys and the power button works. I have an external keyboard and mouse to use the computer now but would like to know what caused this??

MacBook Air 11″, OS X 10.11
