I purchased The Upside awhile ago and now Apple TV is telling me the only way I can watch it is by subscribing to a Showtime trial and then having a Showtime subscription. This movie can only be streamed through Apple as it is. Can anyone help me?

It is possible that a studio removes a title from the iTunes Store. If that is the case, then you can’t stream this title from Apple’s servers anymore. If you did download a copy to your computer, the that should still validate as a purchase linked to your account and play without issues.

The Upside is not currently available in the US iTunes Store. It is available from Showtime and Prime Video for that region.
If you purchased it from the iTunes Store, then please specify when, and in which country or region.
If you changed the region for your Apple ID account, then previous purchases may not be available for the new region, as local Stores have different licensed content.
I purchased the movie in 2019 in the U.S. right after it released and it had a digital code that redeemed in the iTunes store. It shows up in my purchase history on October 18th 2019.
