Use AirPlay to extend screen to TV - cannot connect to TV

I have a LG OLED TV I would like to use as an extended display via AirPlay. But I cannot get it to work or find any lead to why it does not work.

Both TV and Macbook are connected to the same wireless network. They can reach eachother, I can se the TV pop up as an alternative on MacOS for AirDisplay. I have also verified settings on the TV, that AirDisplay is on and so on. I have not setup HomeKit. I Have no iPhone.

Choosing the TV as display makes MacOS ask for a code, and the TV shows the 4-digit code. When entering the code the TV goes black for about 10 seconds and the Macbook seems to have a second monitor connected for a while. But no image ever shows on the screen, and after a while a message pops up on MacOS saying "Cannot connect to display".

Runnig MacOS Catelina on a MacBook Pro 15". TV is updated with latest version of firmware.

Ideas?

Hi eccevery, and thanks for contacting us.

We’re happy to do what we can to get the AirPlay feature to work between your MacBook and your TV. Does your LG TV have a cable indicating it is compatible with Apple AirPlay? You can find a sample of the label in AirPlay system requirements.

If it is, was the TV made between 2019 and 2020? You can find a list of compatible TVs under AirPlay 2–Enabled TVs.

If your TV is listed, you should work through the steps listed in If AirPlay or screen mirroring isn’t working on your device.

Let us know if that helps!

Awesome, thanks for all the pictures.

It looks like everything is configured and set up correctly. So let's take a look at something else. Do you have HomeKit activated right now? If so, is the TV added to one of your devices?

Use the steps in Add and manage TVs and speakers in the Home app to add the TV is it hasn't been added already. Then try to connect them and see if that works.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the reply. I should have provided more info:

  • The TV is LG OLED55B9PLA, year 2020. It has Airplay2 support. I have verified that.
  • The TV is updated with latest software available.
  • Airplay is enabled

Network:

  • Both Macbook and TV are connected to the same wireless network. They can see each other and AirPlay _PARTIALLY_ works. The TV shows up as a second monitor for about 10 seconds on the MacBook, but no image is displayed on the TV. After 10 seconds or so, whatever connection/attempt to connect between the devices is aborted and an error message is displayed on the MacBook: "Could not connect to OLED55B9PLA".

Troubleshooting:

  • WLAN is at 5 GHz only (AC), LG recommends 2.4 for some reason so I tried that and it made no difference at all.
  • Connected both devices to a hotspot, but then the macbook cannot see the TV at all, it is no longer an option in the list of AirPlay devices
  • Updated everything possible to the latest version, restarted devices and so on.
  • Turned firewall off on MacBook.
  • Disconnected external 34" monitor I have, makes no difference
  • Changed refresh rate, resolution settings and so on, makes no difference either.

I have run though all troubleshooting instructions I can find, including If AirPlay or screen mirroring isn’t working on your device. But since the devices CAN make a connection, the one-time password shows up on the TV and so on, nothing in these guides addresses the type of trouble I have.
