iPad refuses to update

What do I do about my iPad? It's a 2nd generation 2017 iPad, and it's been stuck on iOS 12.0 ever since. Updating it normally, it says I'm "not connected to the internet" when I clearly am. I've even tried to update it manually through PC, but it claims there's an "unknown error" and refuses to update. I've tried every common technique I know of. At this point, what do I do? Is my iPad pretty much done for?

If that “dingus” comment was directed at me, sometimes people who post here provide the wrong iPad info.

So, we all have to double check things before we can proceed with any type of advice or solutions.

Also, if that WAS directed at me, I did not appreciate that, as I am ONLY trying to help you with your iPad issue.

That comment was totally uncalled for.

That stated and out of the way, I suggest contacting/reaching out to Apple Product support and services.

If you need to, if initial 1st tier Apple customer support is of no help to you, you can calmly ask to have this issue escalated up to more responsible, senior level Apple customer support employees to see if they can come up with other possible advice/solutions to this iPad update issues, but I make no guarantees, whatsoever.

If need be, you can have your iPad issues escalated all the way up the chain to Apple engineering level customer phone support.

Even if no acceptable resolution, Apple, AT LEAST, logs all support calls and issues.

Best of Luck to You!

This is impossible to understand. Here's why.

  • The second generation iPad was introduced by Apple in 2011.
  • It was discontinued in 2014.
  • The latest iOS version it can use is iOS 9.3.5.

Indeed the second generation iPad Mini was introduced by Apple in 2013 and discontinued in 2017. If that's what you have, it can run iOS 12 but not iPadOS 13.
