MacBook Pro not booting consistently.

After sleep mode the Mac Book Pro 17" unibody does not turn back on. After holding down the power button to switch off, then turning back on, it might start up (chimes. screen) but mostly it can take hours of repetition for it to come on. Once on, it might last a few hours, but then goes off again. Sometimes it comes on with multiple repeating chimes, but usually not. Shutting down the computer when it is on sometimes is effective and it will start up, but often it freezes and I have to go through the process again. I reinstalled OS 10.13, did disk first aid, and it seemed to be better for a few hours, but now its off again. Thankfully I have back up. I am at a loss, and any suggestions will be welcome.

If it is a software issue, then you may be able to boot the laptop into Safe Mode.

If you boot using Verbose Mode you can look to see if you see any "I/O errors" listed on the screen which would confirm a hard drive failure. If there are no I/O errors, the screen may show some other error which can give you a clue.

Sounds like you most likely have a failing hard drive that will need to be replaced. I hope you have a backup.

We can find the problem...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

<script src="https://pastebin.com/embed_js/KuvnghqA"></script>

The relevant part would be like...

Don't use these, they are just examples, yours will appear different.

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
