Pictures folder not in iCloud

I am probably being incredibly naive, but on my Mac (Mojave) > System Preferences > iCloud > Photos > Options, I have checked 'iCloud photos'. But in iCloud.com, I can only see my photos taken on my iPhone. So does 'Photos' in all these. contexts related to iCloud actually only mean 'Photos taken on iPhone'?

If so, what can I do if I want to have everything contained in my 'Pictures' folder on my Mac also backed up in iCloud?

I have my Documents and Desktop folders in iCloud. Would I have to move my 'Pictures' folder into my 'Documents' folder?

Hey Michael,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. To be certain, are you signed in to your Mac with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone? If so, and you still aren't able to see your Mac photos stored in iCloud, we may need to check that your photos are set correctly to upload to iCloud.

iCloud Photos uploads photos and videos from your Mac System Library. Photos and videos that you keep outside of your System Library won't upload or update across your devices. Check out the link below to make sure the photos are in your System Library.

As per your question - So does 'Photos' in all these. contexts related to iCloud actually only mean 'Photos taken on iPhone'?

No , not necessary see the article https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/iphone/iphbfeb468fc/ios

Use My Photo Stream with the Photos app  to view recent photos on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Automatically store up to 1000 images for 30 days without using iCloud storage space or iCloud Photos.

My Photo Stream automatically uploads your most recent photos to iCloud, so you can see them on devices that aren’t using iCloud Photos. (My Photo Stream doesn’t upload Live Photos or videos.) You must be signed in on all devices using the same Apple ID.

For another query - If so, what can I do if I want to have everything contained in my 'Pictures' folder on my Mac also backed up in iCloud .

See these articles https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204264

https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/photos/pht5156cc968/4.0/mac/10.14

Select the tickbox to turn on iCloud Photos.

  • Download Originals to this Mac: To store the original, full-resolution photos both on on your Mac and in iCloud, select this option.

The last query - I have my Documents and Desktop folders in iCloud. Would I have to move my 'Pictures' folder into my 'Documents' folder?

No , the pictures folder are by default , when you click on finder > Go > your user name > pictures .

Also the desktops and documents folders are in iCloud.com as you have turned on iCloud Drive and desktops and documents box is checked see the article https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchle5a61431/10.14/mac/10.14

You can open finder preferences > in the sidebar section > check mark pictures box it will be visible in finder > favourites .

Thanks v. much, karina184. It is quite clear to me now that, since I have not moved any folders of pictures in or out of the Systems folder, in anything to do with syncing automatically with iCloud, 'Photos' means photos taken with my iPhone and visible via the Photos app on my phone and on my Mac. These do sync between my phone and my Mac. So if I still wanted to back up in iCloud or in an independent cloud storage those of my photos that were taken by a non-Apple camera, imported into my Mac and. stored in my Pictures folder, I would have to do do manually. But as I back my whole HD up regularly to a separate hard drive, I shall content myself with that.

Thank you very much indeed, tygb. I started to reply to you earlier, was interrupted, and do not know whether I posted my reply or not. So to reply again: I shall read all the documents linked in your post in due course. But as far as backing up my photos taken by an independent camera, imported to my Mac from the camera and stored in my Pictures folder, is concerned, I have decided, as I have done in the past, just to rely on my backing up my whole HD fairly regularly to an external portable drive.
