Moving/copying iCloud pictures to a designated folder on my pc

New PC and I am stuck. I use icloud and on my old computer used to see my photos downloaded to my computer and could copy/move those pictures to a new folder I create on my pc. My new computer does not allow me to copy/move pictures from the download to a folder I make on my PC. I am stumped . Always indicated an error

To follow up on my previous post, I did find a workaround. You can download photos 1000 at a time on the web based iCloud interface.

Here's what to do:

-Go to www.icould.com, sign in and click on Photos.

-Under library on the left, make sure "photos" is selected

-Select the top photo by left clicking it once (you should see a blue boarder around the photo when it's selected).

-Scroll down the webpage approximately 1000 photos (or a little under, max is 1000)

-Hold "Shift" on your keyboard and left click the picture you have approximated to be the 1000th photo.

-All the photos from the first one you click to the last one should now have the blue boarder. You should also have a count on the top right of the webpage of how many photos you've selected.

-To download the selection, click the cloud symbol with the arrow pointing down on the top right hand corner of the webpage. Your images will download into a compressed zip file which you can open and pull the photos out of.

-Repeat the process to get the rest of the photos if you have more than 1000 photos to download.

Hope this helps!

My understanding is that the icloud for PC has changed and the new version no longer downloads the photos to the PC like the older version did. The new set-up creates a sync such that you can copy, not move the local items. If you delete the icloud local version it will delete on the cloud as well. I am frustrated by this change, and the annoying error message. My suggestion is to go back to the web version of iCloud, select the photos you want then click the download icon. The icons can be found on the top right of the screen and although they appeared to be greyed out the icons are functional. I wish Apple would make the icons black so I could easily find which options are open to me

I have also been having issues since updating my computer and having to reinstall iCloud for PC. However, I have found that I can highlight them all on my iCloud Photos folder in Windows Explorer, then right-click and choose "Always keep on this device." Then once they all download locally, I can COPY them to the folder where I want them locally. (I cannot *move* them.) Then once I've confirmed they've copied correctly, I go back to my iCloud Photos folder in Windows Explorer and then delete them there.

This is working for me with little issue now that I know I can't just choose Move to accomplish what I want. Sadly though, this does not delete them from iCloud. I have to go back in and delete online or from my phone to remove them from my iOS devices and iCloud.

Work around that works...

-Go to www.icloud.com, sign in and click on Photos.

-Under library on the left, make sure "photos" is selected

-Select the top photo by left clicking it once (you should see a blue boarder around the photo when it's selected).

I was having the same "operation is not supported by cloud provider" error and I found the most elegant solution (at least for me). I think we are receiving this error because most of us are trying to "drag & drop" our photos using our mouse.

Instead, if you:

  1. Select all the photos you want to copy in the iCloud Photos folder
  2. Right-click and select Copy
  3. Then Paste them in a local folder

.. it works like magic!

Windows interprets drag & drop action as a "Move" (i.e. cut & paste) and wants to prevent you from removing your photos from iCloud. I know this is true because if I try to cut-and-paste instead, I get the same error.

@landru2's solution is also great and I believe it works because of the above principle.

Hope this helps some of you!

Hello cindi288,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

From reading your post, it appears the iCloud photos aren't able to copy/paste to a folder from the iCloud for PC account, correct? We're here to help you take a look in to that!

Since this worked before, are your currently running the same Windows OS, iCloud for OC version and running an Anti-Software that could be restricting the iCloud access? Here are a couple articles to follow on steps in attempting to resolve this issue:

Set up iCloud on your Windows PC

Set up and use iCloud Photos on your Windows PC

Hopefully this helps!

I'm having the same exact issue. It's like Apple has taken away support for transferring your files in bluk to Windows on their newest version of iCloud for Windows (Why???). I've been using an iPhone with my PC for years. iCloud for Windows used to be downloadable in bulk, but now, there's no option in the notification area in Windows to "download all," now the only way to see your photos is via thumbnail preview, and when you select all and try to transfer out, Windows gives this error: 0x8007017B

The above help from the Apple tech was not helpful. To give you a little background, I'm a certified computer tech, 10+ years of full time work experience. The fix they gave makes you double click each file you want to download. I have over 5000 photos I want to download. Apple expects me to sit there and double click 5000 files? What are you thinking guys????

Let's talk about the old version of iCloud for Windows. All you needed to do was open iCloud for Windows in the notification area, click it and download was an option on the photos section. Here you were presented with downloading "all" photos, or by year. This was fantastic and worked for large quantities of photos.

Apple, please either give us a proper fix as the fix above is horrible for the new version of iCloud... your iCloud for Windows 11.1 is terrible, simple enough solution, just go back to the old version (or even just provide the older software here for others with this problem... that will solve it for people who find this post at least!).

Attached is a screenshot with the horrible directions for iCloud for Windows 11.1 and my screenshot of the notification area icon on the new version of iCloud for Windows.

Don't make us Apple mobile device lovers convert because of a silly issue like this! This is obliviously a ploy to make people convert to Apple computers (which people like myself will never do, we wont go into those reasons here) or to get people to buy more iCloud space. Please put yourself in the customer's shoes here Apple and right the wrong.

Thank you... ?

unfortunately if you do this the 'created' and 'modified' dates on the file are set to the date of download .. if (like me) you sort your photos by date they are now out of order.

There are 2 options when you download from iCloud. One retains metadata, one does not.

See the 2 options in this Apple video. Choose the unmodified original to get the full size file with the original metadata.

Yes. I am operating on a new laptop using windows 10. I have icloud installed. When I view the pictures in the icloud picture folder in my start menu, I see the pictures downloaded to my computer (it takes a very long time to view the pictures as they turn from thumbnails to pictures, very annoying to say the least). When I try to select images from this folder and move to a folder on my laptop homescreen, there is notification that an unexpected error has occurred and the file cannot be moved...the notification also displays the operation is not supported by the cloud sync provider and displays error cod 0x8007017B

I would like to know how to copy or move the photos I select from the icloud download to a folder on my desktop. I have not had enough clarification on how to perform this, and have spent a great deal of time trying to learn how to perform this task. My other computer was windows 8 and I could copy/move pictures from that icloud download window to my folders on my PC. I appreciate the help and I am sure it is something very simple that I am missing.

I had the same problem, but this time just with moving single files. Big thanks to djalexjoyce. His solution worked perfectly for me (although his link to www.icloud.com was mistyped).

Until the last Windows update (build 19041.450), I was able to transfer files just fine, so it's possible that Apple didn't intentionally take away support for it. It may just need to update iCloud in order for it to be fully compatible with the newest version of windows.
