I am using iPhone 6+, with the latest iOS available for the device that is 12.4.8. I cannot use iMessage and facetime. When I turn it on, it asks for the regular carrier permission, and then activation error message comes on. rest carrier related text messages like for icloud and some payment apps do get sent, but not for these two.

I have the same issue.
iphone 6 plus
iOS 12.4.8 (16G201)
I just get a screen in iMessage and FaceTime with the appleID. When I enter the password for that appleID, it just says “An error occurred during activation. Try again.”
Ive followed all the online help (eg: “If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime”).
I’ve reset network settings, logged out of the appleID etc. nothing works.
Hey man, hope you’re doing good. I contacted Apple support through “Schedule a call” and they got back to me and solved the issue. For me, they said that my apple-id or my number was marked as spam and that’s why the iMessage and FaceTime could not work. Hope this helps
