change apple id in icloud

In my browser's address line, I entered icloud.com. It went immediately to the iCloud.com site, showing the 12 icons for Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Photos, etc. I wanted to read mail, so I tapped the Mail icon. It displayed an error message telling me, "iCloud email needed. To use iCloud Mail, create a new email address by turning on Mail in your iCloud settings using iOS or MacOS."

When I tap on the the words "Account settings" it displays details of my profile, showing the old Apple ID, which is my @gmail.com email address, that I used before I got an iCloud mail address. On all my devices I now use my @me.com email address as the current Apple ID. But recently I needed to reactivate the @gmail.com address as my Apple ID in order to download an upgrade of a mobile app that I originally bought using that Apple ID. I also yesterday to upgrade the very insecure password of the @gmail.com Apple ID to something stronger, generated by 1Password, which I installed last week. The system did not reject the new password, but told me that it needed to be reviewed and they'd get back to me w/in 24 hours. No news in more than 24 hours, so evidently I'm stuck out of reading @me.com mail online. I can still download it to my desktop, but I want to see it online sometimes. I looked in my iPhone and on my MacBook and don't see any way to follow the instruction to "create a new email address by turning on Mail in [my] iCloud settings." Any help toward a solution will be much appreciated. Thank you.

As per this article https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mchl1a02d711/10.14/mac/10.14

Download items stored only in iCloud Drive to your Mac

In some cases items may be stored in iCloud Drive and not yet downloaded to your Mac.

  1. Control-click the items that you want to download (indicated by the In iCloud status icon
  2. Choose Download Now.
  3. After the items are on your Mac, you can work with them without an Internet connection.

Right click on each folder ( say folder created with Microsoft word ) use get info https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchlp1774/10.14/mac/10.14 , check whether folder is locked , what are read and write permissions for it https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchlp1203/10.15/mac/10.15

https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchlp1774/10.14/mac/10.14

, is it shared by some one , is this folder created by third party app that is not compatible with Mac , also was the app updated with latest version ) as per this article https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206985

Also when you created the file and saved the file what was location to save is it iCloud Drive or download in finder or to some other location and did download interrupted https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/safari/sfri40598/13.0/mac/10.15

https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/safari/ibrwa006/13.0/mac/10.15

What was the size of file https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201104

Many more things are to be explored in user library like no extensions are installed , plug - ins .

Also using vpn services , anti virus , unknown softwares / unidentified apps that can corrupt Mac system files / inbuilt applications are the reasons that will stop smooth working for Mac .

Access your Desktop and Documents files on another device

When you add your Desktop and Documents to iCloud Drive, all of your files move to iCloud and any new files you create are automatically stored in iCloud too. Then you can find your files on all of your devices.

If you want to store your files in iCloud Drive and another cloud storage service, you can keep copies of your files in both, but you can't keep folders from a third-party cloud service in iCloud Drive. You can keep your other cloud service folders in a different place on your Mac, like the home folder.

Your files upload to iCloud each time your device connects to the Internet. Depending on your Internet speed, the time it takes for you to see your files on your other devices might vary.

a ) Open system preferences > click on iCloud and click on sign out , you can see a window stating do you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac before signing out ? The boxes iCloud Drive , contacts , calendars , reminders are checked by default - so click on keep a copy . A pop up window will appear are you sure you want to stop updating and continue with sign out ( any documents not updated to iCloud Drive , will be moved to a folder named “ iCloud Drive archive in your home folder on this Mac ) so don’t click on “ cancel “ but " click on continue with sign out ."

A pop up window will appear . Do you want to keep a copy of safari passwords on this Mac ?

( 1 ) Delete from Mac ( 2 ) cancel ( 3 ) keep on Mac , so its optional you can select keep on Mac or click on delete from Mac ( as some users write down the safari passwords in a safe place and they can autofill it again . )

( b ) It will prompt enter the Apple ID password for mail address to turn off find my Mac , so enter your Apple ID password and click on continue , a small circle will rotate , be patient .

In the upcoming screen shot delete the Apple ID completely from the box .

And then sign in with Apple ID say example1@gmail.com

A new Apple ID say example1@icloud.com or using desired mail domain like yahoo , hotmail ....can be created by clicking on create Apple ID .

Regarding 1 password I avoid using it ( as never used and no whereabouts it ) and prefer setting up icloud keychain https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204085

For iPhone that is synced it has to be individually signed out https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT208242

And then signed in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204053

You are using Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6 open system preferences > click on Apple ID icon again click on iCloud , in previous version when system preferences was opened you can click on iCloud , in Mac OS catalina it has been changed .

In overview section you can see sign out option .

Regarding 1password its a third party application ( consult senior apple care advisors for installing ) https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201232 it you will get a big no as it will conflict with iCloud Keychain , people use these apps and Mac might get corrupt , for creating passwords see articles https://support.apple.com/lt-lt/guide/mac-help/mchlp2555/mac

Problem is now solved, in two phases. Basically, the problem was that I was signed on to icloud.com with the @gmail.com Apple ID but signed in to my computer with the @me.com Apple ID. First, I managed on my computer to upgrade the iCloud storage capacity to 2TB. Second, I went to the icloud.com site which automatically logged me in with the @gmail.com Apple ID. Then I went to Account Settings, and the foot of the page, clicked on Sign out of all browsers. That let me sign back in using the @me.com Apple ID. I hope this will be the default in future, but anyway I know how to get around the problem that blocked me yesterday.

Thank you for the very detailed reply, which I will try to follow through: But right now, I'm stuck on the very first sentence, which reads "Open system preferences > click on iCloud and click on sign out." Evidently this refers to the MacBook's system preferences. But I don't see anything about "iCloud" directly appearing when I open system preferences, as the first of my attached screenshots shows. But, if I tap the "Apple ID" icon, then the second screenshot appears. I don't see anything on my computer that resembles the graphic shown in your reply.

So, where do I go from this point? That's my first question now.

You also say you prefer to use the iCloud keychain. I have keychain on my MacBook, but I don't think I have setup iCloud keychain yet. 1Password has a fairly steep initial learning curve, but I've been working through a lot of that over the last week, but I'll also take a look at the link to iCloud keychain that you provided.

Thank you.

Thomas

Another question if you don't mind, since we've been talking about iCloud drive. That has been activated on my computer for 200GB, apparently since 5 June 2020. I have setup my Documents folder to sync to the iCloud drive, as shown in the graphic below: But what do the cloud figures mean? Some folders and files show it and others don't.
