FaceTiming an IPad user who does not own an iPhone

Hi all, I have a question about using the iPhone messages app video call feature to place a FaceTime call to someone who only has an iPad and no iPhone. As of now the video chat button is disabled(grayed out) on my phone when I go to this persons contact info in the messages app. Is there any way to enable this feature from the iPad itself to be callable from the messages app? As of now I can only get it to work by going through the FaceTime app directly and dialing this persons number.

Thanks!

On the iPad, you should enable any/all addresses by which an incoming FaceTime call can be accepted:

Settings > FaceTime > [YOU CAN BE REACHED BY FACETIME AT] - enable addresses/number as appropriate

I thought you said your friend has an iPad? If they do, the phone number does not matter. They need to be signed into iMessage and Facetime on their iPad and be connected to a network to make and receive Facetime calls. Not having an iPhone does present limitations. They cannot text with or Facetime with anything other than other iOS based devices.

The phone number is meaningless on your iPhone, or iPad. You CANNOT Facetime to her phone number. She doesn't have an iPhone. You will NEVER be able to Facetime to her phone number. Everything is working as designed and there is nothing to figure out. She has an Android phone, which will never be recognized by iMessage or Facetime on iPad.

I hope that makes is simple for you?

So my friend has an IPad and an android phone. She is signed in on IMessages and Facetime on her Ipad. Settings->FaceTime->"You can be reach by FaceTime at..." shows a phone number under it and also an email address. She can make calls through that. Similarly other people can reach her by dialing her phone number in their FaceTime app. Messages->Settings->"You can receive messages and reply to" has no phone number listed under it. It only has an email address. When she places a call from the IPad messages app out, the caller id shows this email address. I can make an outgoing video call to this email address and successfully FaceTime her. However, when I go to her contact where her phone number is stored in my iphone and try to video call, the video call button is disabled. Other people try to do this as well and are not able to figure out how to place a facetime call to her due to the disabled button. I'd like to figure out how to hook this number up to her messages app so that contacts with the number stored have a video chat button that is enabled. Thanks
