USB Superdrive not working with MacBook Pro and USB multi-port connectors

I have a usb c to thunderbolt multi-port adaptor connected to MacBook Pro. when I plug the USB superdrive into the multi-port I get a warning message that "USB Accessory needs power "Connect Apple USB SuperDrive to a USB port on this Mac". and the drive will not work (there is obviously no USB port on the MacBook). However, when I connect the drive to my iMac straight to USB in the back it works immediately. The multi-port adaptor works for other usb devices no issue.

Apple SuperDrives have always been quirky in their behavior. I know the older Super Drives would not work when attached to a USB hub. A multi-port adapter may be acting kind of like a USB hub. Instead try using a plain USB-C to USB-A Adapter. If you have a touchbar laptop, then try using the ports on the other side of the laptop. Also try disconnecting all other external devices.
