Airpods 2 charge in case when it's connected to the charge cable, but the case itself won't charge

Not much more info than that, but essentially, my Airpods 2 charge up just fine when inside the case and the case is connected to the power cable, but while the lightning bolt/charge symbol shows up next to the airpods when looking at the charge status on my phone, the case shows 0% and doesn't have a lightning bolt/charge symbol next to it. So it seems the power is passing through the case to the Airpods, but the case itself refuses to charge.

They were purchased a little over a year ago and I don't feel like the case would take a dive this quickly considering I work from home and essentially only use them here and not in a strenuous way.
