Water resistance is never a guarantee against water damage. It merely means your device is more likely to survive water exposure than a non-water resistance device would be. But it does not guarantee that your device won't be damaged from exposure to water. That's why water damage is not covered under the warranty.

Those specifications are the test standards that the independent testing labs use to meet the international IP standard. And thats all they are - they are not a claim than any and every device, at any stage in its life cycle, will withstand those laboratory test standards.

Anything rated as water resistant to less than 50 meters should only be considered splash proof...

About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later

The standards they are quoting come from the watch world and have been around for a long time. If you get water damage it is assumed you exceeded the test specification.

It is valid in a laboratory testing setting.
