imovie crops photographs

Making movies in iMovie would take a fraction of the time if I didn’t at first have to make my photo teenee-tiny in the Square-ready App. and adding a large border. The photos get cropped in iMovie. This has been an issue for years, so I don’t understand why Apple doesn’t change this. This isn’t a “Ken Burns” issue- annoying just the same. It’s that photos cannot be seen fully- incredibly annoying for an artist/photographer trying to put together an online education class. If you know any tips to change this feature, please, do-tell!

This forum is for iMovie for Mac, so I assume that you are using iMovie for Mac. iMovie for iOS is a completely different program so if you are using that one you should post on the iMovie for iOS forum.

What crop settings are you using? Crop to Fit will put in the photo at its native aspect ratio, with black bars around it if necessary to make it fit the 16:9 dimensions of iMovie's screen. If your photo is way out of alignment with iMovie's aspect ratio, then maybe there would be some cropping to fit by iMovie.

Thank you, Rich. I’m using an Apple iPad (didn’t realize I might not be in the correct forum as I selected my device before proceeding). I guess the iPad just doesn’t have the option “crop to fit”. I REALLY wish it did.

I appreciate your help, Rich. These comments in the iPad forum were in 2005. Apple seems to have “simplified” iMovie and done away with the recommended actions. I’ve restarted my project and am giving all my photos a huge border. I must remember next time to take pictures not too close that I want to include in an iMovie. Thanks again, Kate

Rich! I figured out a trick! I’m so amazed. When selecting a photograph to add to the movie, there are the three little white dots on the thumbnail. Before adding the photo, click the dots, and choose the option “Picture in Picture”, then add the photo. It adds the photo like a newsman used to have the photo by their heads. Then from there you can resize the picture. Now since it’s an overlay for the picture underneath, make that picture a blank pic, all in black or white for a border. Thanks again for your help. -Kate
