Storage Problem

My iPhone keeps saying that I'm out of storage. I checked the storage, and none of the apps are taking up very much space, but at the bottom, under the "System" (using 5.79 GB), it says "Other," which is taking up 44.63 GB and it fluctuates a lot. It basically takes up whatever space is available. I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it. It's making it harder and harder to use my phone for anything. My phone also won't connect when I plug it into my computer. I can't back it up or sync it or anything. It just keeps acting like I'm unplugging and plugging it back in over and over again. I don't know if the two are related or not.
