I had a Gmail icon in upper left hand corner of the menu bar on my MacBook Pro. I accidentally did something to make it disappear (????) and it was replaced with the icon of the webpage I was on at that time. How do I get the Gmail icon back up there? This happened before but I cannot remember how I solved it.

It sounds like you have an issue where you're missing the Gmail icon on your Mac.
Are you referring to the Touch Bar on your MacBook Pro? If so, take a look here for some ways to customize the Touch Bar and get that icon back: How to use the Touch Bar on your MacBook Pro - Apple Support. If you're referring to the Gmail icon being missing from the Dock, this can help: Use the Dock on Mac - Apple Support.
If you're referring to something else, let us know exactly where you're used to seeing the icon that is now missing. And does it happen when using a specific app?

OK, so here's the deal. At the very top of the screen ya got your...whatever it's called; contains the address of the site you are on. Then, underneath that there are the Favorites. Below that are there open tabs.

Normally, in the left hand corner of the Favorites bar, there is a Gmail Icon. Ya know, it looks like this:

Well, apparently I hit some key(s) which made it disappear and it was replaced with the icon of the site I happened to be on at that time. I got rid of that.
Obviously there is a way to get the icon up there. THAT'S what I want to know.
If I wanted it in the Touch Bar or the Dock I would have been able to figure that out myself. I tried to find out how to get the Gmail icon back, googled and googled ,but I was unable to find the solution.

OK, I figured it out. With the site open (Gmail) you go to Window>Pin Tab, and walah, Bob's yer uncle.
